You have made this awesome looking email in Microsoft Word where the font reflects your branding. You then want to send that font out in your HTML email newsletter and it doesn’t work! What the font indeed.
Where did all my pretty go?
Unfortunately you cannot use your awesome fonts in your email because they aren’t a web standard/web safe font, meaning its not a font that is supported across email clients, internet browsers and operating systems.
A websafe font will often hold server font names as a”fallback system” to ensure maximum compatibility between email clients/browsers/operating systems. If the browser doesn’t support the first font, it tries the next font.
style="font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"
This will display Arial, however if Arial isn’t supported it will go to Helvetica and so on.
If you wanted to use another font you technically could (eg Microsofts Calibri font) An example:
style="font-family: 'Calibri', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"
However Calbri would only display in email clients with the font installed on that machine. For those email clients not supporting Calibri it would simply go down the line.
A list of CSS Web Safe Fonts is available here courtesy of w3schools.com.
Stick to these are your email font should stay consistent across the majority of email clients.
